With its striking marquetry patterns, the Bösendorfer Marquis is a splendid application of Bösendorfer's Viennese craftsmanship to ancient Egyptian, Roman and Greek aesthetics. The origin of the Marquis's design dates back to Egyptian art which appears in wall paintings, taken from archeological sites and dispersed throughout Europe over several centuries of recurrent "Egyptianism." It was in reverence of this legacy that the symbol of the Marquis was adopted as the emblem of European nobility.

American and Austrian walnut and maple are used in making the high-polish surface of this grand piano. The diamond-shaped Marquis pattern is a special maple inlay repeated 500 times over the instrument. Each field is further decorated with a floral motif showing two delicate leaves crossing each other. The effect is one of dignified solidity, with a subtle inc- lination towards playfulness, expressed in the checkerboard-like variations of the basic shape. The marquetry patterns are continued in masterful variation, on the piano legs and the lyre, testifying to the superior skill of Bösendorfer's master artisans.

The Marquis is limited to special request.
